Took DIVA for a nice 50 degree top down drive yesterday trying to get the monitors to reset so I can pass emissions and get my tags. I couldn't find my OBD-II dongle so I didn't know whether my sensors reset or not (they didn't) so I've failed testing twice. I finally found my dongle so when I go out today I'll be watching to see when/if they set.

Anyone with experience swapping from a cast manifold on an NB1 to an NB2 manifold? Do I need new gaskets or just use what's on the stock manifold/exhaust?

Have you already tried following the drive cycle on TDR's website (https://trackdogracing.com/OBDII.aspx)?
Mazda drive cycle:

Pre-requisites: MIL off and no DTCs present (this is where clearing your codes comes in); fuel level between 15 and 85%; all accessories OFF; cold start (preferred 8 hour cold soak w/ engine between 68 and 86 deg F at start-up)

1) Start vehicle and idle 5 min.

2) Rev engine in neutral or park to 2300-2700 rpm for 15 seconds

3)Rev engine in neutral or park to 3800-4200 rpm for 15 seconds

4)Idle engine for 20 seconds with cooling fan stopped.

5)Accelerate to 52-55 mph, maintain speed (in high gear) for 1 1/2 minutes

6) Decelerate to 15 mph, and then drive for 13 minutes at speeds ranging from 15 to 35 mph

7) maintain steady 25 mph for 50 seconds.

Installed some of my custom handmade interior! Making this has been my on-again-off-again project for the last 3 months.

Also installed Katzkin autumn colored seats, new seatbelts (in a deep red..!) and restored the seatbelt receptacles by re-dyeing the plastics.

Just gotta figure out what I’m going to do with the airbag cover—cover in vinyl or paint. I don’t want to inhibit it’s function, so I’m leaning towards painting it.

I agree on both counts. After seeing your post, and how nicely designed these were I knew these were the way I was going. Unfortunately the weather and timing hasn’t cooperated lately for me to actually install them. I can attest that they are very high quality pieces. Hopefully they’ll keep those flimsy sheet metal mounts from cracking.

GM - Headlights look like a good improvement!

That's got to be the narrowest garage door I've ever seen. Your car fits through that?

Mal

27th November 2018, 15:00

Believe it or not, you may well be able to see the road better with the old lights. Certainly you will dazzle oncoming drivers less. The garage door is the worst place to judge how well headlights light the road.

I once "upgraded" a neighbors NA and the garage door was just like yours. Then we put an old bulb in one side and aimed it down the road. We then blocked one then the other. The old bulb was amazingly better at illuminating the road and equally worse at dazzling when viewed head on.

The science on headlight color temperature is quite interesting and far from intuitive.

Thanks, they will be. Lol, it is a normal size garage door...it is the angle/lighting that makes it look small.

You say some off the wall things Mal. A BETTER quality bulb is ALWAYS going to be better over a old tired OEM replacement bulb. Obviously I can't speak for your experience especially without knowing what the "old" bulb was and what the "new" bulb was as the "old" bulb may have been of better quality than the "new" bulb. I'm not judging the lights based solely on those pics, that would be ridiculous. I did lots of reading, watching video comparison etc before the purchase.

As far as light color goes, for driving lights the white(r) light gives better contrast than OEM bulbs(halogen) that are more yellow, thus giving better visibility. That is a fact established by every reputable bulb manufacturer never mind the fact that just about every vehicle is going towards HID or LED that has much whiter light output.

In fact I laid out the source of some of that information in my build post if you, or others, care to see driving comparison, specs, etc. of these bulbs and others. I NEVER make impulse buys on functional parts before doing research on said part(s), never will.

You may have noted that i said, "may well". While there are bulbs that look white and include the whole spectrum, many get their white look by limiting the part of the spectrum that reflects off typical roadside objects. Those that do that with a blue coating should be banned. Others hurt visability without the blue coating and still others include the rest of the spectrum and simply trade dazzling for visability. Many of those are perfectably acceptable due to improvements in aiming and cutoff but even they dazzle over a hill and give lousy visability unless brights are used in undulating terrain.

It is certainly true that headlights are moving away from the "warmer" colors. The tradeoff between dazzling oncoming drivers and illuminating the road is obvious. Thank goodness for dual divided hiways.

I doubt we'll ever go back to France in the 90"s but if you experienced that, you'll understand my point.

I guess my point is that off the white garage door is what's, "off the wall" as you say. When you open with that, it hurts your credibility.

But its on for the weekend at Road Atlanta which is supposed to be wet again just like the last time. I like the rain but would like some dry track time there which might be Sunday. At least round one of rainx is on the windsheild. Will get another one or two rounds on as the wipers do not work to well over 100mph.

Brighter lights are all fine on isolated country roads when you are by yourself but on today's congested highways, collectively they just reduce visibility for everyone. The net result is not better. Just think of all those too high, too bright HID and LED lights in massive pickup trucks and SUV's coming at you in the opposing lane or 15 feet off your back bumper. Overall drivers are not served well by everyone having brighter less controlled lighting. Time for some rethink.

For anyone interested in ACTUAL proof/evidence of the increased functionality of these bulbs instead of speculation/conjecture and you can't find the video in the provided link then here is a direct link to said video, driving comparison starts at 2:18 for these bulbs.
https://youtu.be/uNPB4EVr7-4

It amazes me how such a basic item that increases safe driving is so controversial. Definitely agree with the extremely bright lights, driving with multiple driving lights of such brightness issue, improperly aimed, etc....couldn't agree more.

And after having experienced driving with them first hand at night they are much better and no where near too bright or "dazzling" other road goers.

Mal

29th November 2018, 04:10

That video didn't make any mention whatsoever of dazzling oncoming drivers nor color temperature. "Brightness" was the only measure. Actual proof and evidence? Of how bright they are but nothing else.

My test with the bright blue vs dimmer/warmer was telling. Try it. Take a cheap blue coated bulb and a warmer dimmer bulb and compare them on a garage door and the picture will be similar to that at the first post.

Now point the two down a typical road. You can see far better with the warmer light. The point of using the cheap blue coated bulb is that that part of the spectrum does little for visability...it only dazzles. The full spectrum bulbs light well but if you noticed what the blue bulb did you see that the blue part of the spectrum is wasted on anything that is not white or near white; it only dazzles.

Why do you think police use blue lights? They dazzle. So why wouldn't that part of the spectrum do the same?

How "bright" a bulb is is only part of the story. Safe driving is is not directly connected to how bright your headlights are unless you are the only one on the road.

You don't have to understand but can you see where the controversy is? Could it be that the subject is not so roll on the floor laughable?

For a bit of science on the subject.

GreaseMonkey2000

Once again if you would just CLICK the link in the original post there is a link where over 50 bulbs were tested and includes the color temp as tested. Normally I'd continue such a discussion to try and help you see that you are wrong but clearly you have no intention of seeing the facts, only your own opinion.

Again the information in the links I provided was only SOME of the information I found and I have driven with these first hand so I now know first hand these are brighter and offer superior down road visibility but feel free to continue with your speculation based opinion vs first hand experience of the bulbs in question.

Not sure why I bothered as my memory tells me EVERYTIME you engage in a thread about brighter, more modern lighting it is the same narrow minded and outdated viewpoint that outdated lighting options are superior to modern ones which is contrary to what every car manufacturer is doing and the lighting industry as a whole has come to agree on(with actual testing and facts to back it up). Instead of cluttering up this thread with your rant perhaps you should create a thread on the subject and educate us all on the subject. :ohno:

P.S.-STOP looking directly into other vehicles lights and you can avoid being "dazzled"(unless you like being a deer) and flip your mirror down at night to take advantage of the anti glare feature, both things you should be doing in the first place especially since you have been driving for more than five decades, which I presume based on your age.

Yep, figured as much. It doesn't look like a particularly expensive top. Wonder how much I could replace it for. I live in Florida, so during the spring/summer I'll have it down for a good bit of the time.

They’re covered in Katzkin leather seat upholstery—I disassembled the seats, removed the factory upholstery from the foam, and installed the new leather from Katzkin.

Powder coated the metal and re-dyed the plastics too. Some people might call these new seats at this point?

Looking at your seat and carpet install from above and the detail in the refurbishment of the seats, it looks like your building a beautiful car!

When I bought the 2000 last March, it came with an alarm. I removed the siren and bypassed the "no-start" function shortly afterward but left the rest in place for the keyless entry function. Lately my battery has been dying after a couple of days so I unhooked the power source for the alarm and that problem went away. Today I removed all (well almost all; a few wires were easier to cut and leave in place) of the residual wiring, main box and relays. Weight savings! As a bonus, my left foot no longer rubs against it when working the clutch. Apparently Mazda left plenty of space above the clutch that the alarm installer had pinched. I always thought it was strange that an OEM design would have you kicking components on a regular basis, now there's a cavernous cavity up there. Who knew? (Besides everyone without this alarm).

Lately my battery has been dying after a couple of days so I unhooked the power source for the alarm and that problem went away.

I had the same problem with a Clifford Intelligard 8000. It drained the battery because it would occasionally take 640 mA whereas the dark current from the battery (the current with nothing on) should be around 20 mA.

First, locate the unit. Mine was zip-tied to the hood release cable. But you can't just unplug it - the ignition switch start and run is usually taken through relays in the alarm so it can stop the car from being started. Find the connections and put them back as they were. You may have to add wire to splice them together - the wiring to the ignition switch does not have any excess length. Then at least, it will not keep you from starting your own car. You can unplug the unit after this.

This left three connectors hanging down from the unit, but since one was a four-pin connector for the starter and ignition, I could remove it immediately. I put up with connectors hanging down by the clutch pedal for a while then decided to remove every trace of the installation. I went through every connection and found that the wires in the car's harnesses were stripped back and the connector wires were wrapped around them then wrapped in tape - no solder or vampire taps. Because of this, I can't say whether the installation or the unit was faulty, but I don't care - the 2001 has an immobilizer and that is enough protection for me. And thunderstorms always set off the alarm, so I don't plan on putting it in anything again.

This site:

https://www.the12volt.com/

has the installation manuals for most alarms including mine. The site is a little difficult to navigate but this:

https://www.the12volt.com/carsecurity/carsecurity.asp

was the section I needed to make sure everything was gone.

Rolled 273k at about 110mph. Granted it was at Road Atlanta. Very wet weekend but it dried out. Saturday was fun tho. I think I let one or two cars pass. Otherwise I was passing everybody. Dry time was about a 1:53 beating my 1:56 record. Still need more balls to go faster. And an engine with less than 190k on it.

Plus I got some of the vinyl back on the car. Numbers need to go back on plus maybe some other things. Long overdue and I am tired of doing tape numbers.

I suspected that, but the leak stopped before I could get the airbox out of the way to be sure. It seems like that side of that mixing manifold was dry. Now I suspect the seal between the mm and the water pump; that could suck. I will either drive it until it gets really warmed up and wet tonight or get one of those pressurizing kits at the autozone to see the leak.

Spring type hose clamps provide more uniform pressure than worm gear which is what I'm guessing you're referring to. The previous mechanic put one on when they did the water pump replacement last year before I got the car, but I'll be swapping it for the correct type when I replace the radiator and hoses.

Worm gear clamps work but I don't know, I'm just anal like that. :)

The best are the Oetiker clamps, but they're pricey and 1-time use items.

Why not just buy a new catted midpipe like Roadstersport, or similar, and bolt it right in? You’ll get better flow too. Before spending the money though, you need to diagnose “what” caused it to fail, which is usually something ignition related (coil pack, wires, etc.), otherwise you’ll kill your new CAT almost immediately.

I started installing my new DDMWorks Stage 2 intake. First minor issue is getting it into place. It’s a tight fit. Then the bigger issue. There’s a bracket that’s bent into an L shape with holes on one side tat match the MAF housing on one side and holes in the new air box on the other. I tried for probably a half hour to figure out how it mounted. Then it hit me. The bracket was bent 180 degrees the wrong way. After a bit of work with a vice, sheet metal vise-grips and a hammer I had it bent the right way. Everything then went together fine. Except that I unpacked it at work and left the crossover tube there. I’ll post a pic when I’m completely done.

No way to dim it and it's annoying and distracting on dark back roads. So I came up with this cheap solution - just hang a piece of vinyl over it which I can lift to adjust volume, change the channel when they play Nirvana every 15 minutes etc. I was hoping that it would hang down on it's own but I needed to weight it with a masonry nail. I've had a couple of JVC HUs. They usually have a 'dimmed' or 'night' setting, but the level isn't adjustable, and it's usually far too bright. Might be OK in a city setting where there's lots of ambient light, but not dark enough for rural driving.

No dimmer in the menu, no separate wire to hook up to the lights for auto dim. This was a very cheap headunit, literally $20 - which means I don't have to worry about theft or weather and I'm not looking for audiophile perfection in a Miata anyway. It was fine all summer, it's just now that I notice the glare, so I don't want to do anything permanent like marker or paint. We have a "Dual" brand CD-less head unit in our truck that is the same, no dimmer, auto or manual and just like yours it is nearly unbearable at night.

Since we're on the HU discussion, the JVC i bought is the first HU I've bought which is digital streaming/usb only, no cd drive. Was amazed at how much smaller and lighter it was than a standard CD capable HU.

I’ll post a pic when I’m completely done.Got the crossover tube home. I really try not to complain but the coupling tubes they provide won’t go over the MAF housing. No way, no how. The instructions say that end will be difficult but it’s not happening at all. I even tried heating it in boiling water to soften/expand it and soaping the MAF housing. Not happening. I’m going to cut a couple inches off of each end of the stock crossover tube and use that for couplings. For $350 I would expect better.

Unable to replicate coolant leak, I adjusted the clamp on the radiator lower hose and will be watching the temp and garage floor closely for leaks.

Not sure if 2004 wound be same but on my 99 the temp gauge is pretty useless in stock form, you will see coolant coming out somewhere before you see the gauge showing any sign of overheating, plenty on this subject on the forum hence I ended up doing the mod on it....

Google is your friend. Search "miata temp gauge linearization mod" and you'll get several different sets of guides. Anything from 95 on will work. But in the end, it's NOT a CALIBRATED gauge, but at least the needle moves with temp rather than just sitting at "normal" until you overheat and are stuck on the side of the road with a molten pile of goo where your engine used to be,

One of the mods I plan to do to the '99 is to add a 2 pod A pillar gauge set with real water temp and oil pressure gauges. The oil pressure is easy, tap from the Thompsom oil filter relocation unit. For the water temp I plan to use the Garage Star thermostat adapter block (https://garagestar.com/product/garage-star-temperature-sandwich-plate/)

I use a ScanGaugeII in the '04 that monitors the water temp.

Started doing my coilovers. Stripped a few nuts, and am having issues removing the two top hat nuts on one corner. But still a straightforward install. Is it normal for the two top hat nuts to be crimped/staked? All of mine were and I had to use my biggest breaker bar and a 6 pt socket to avoid rounding them off.

I also finally got an excuse to use my hollow head ratchet set. Putting a hex head screw driver through it to hold the strut shaft in place while removing the nuts. Worked great.

Bled the brakes and clutch. I should have left the clutch alone; my observation that clutch hydraulics don't get hot and slaves are borderline disposable should have combined with the downsides of effort and risk of getting air in. It still doesn't feel quite right but I don't want to keep dumping fluid through it.

Car is icky with pumice from my jaunt to and from Chemult in very inclement conditions. White-knucking at half the speed limit because wrong tires was pretty irresponsible of me, but it steeled me for a much longer trip planned for basically the rest of the year (on Interstates, and hopefully no snow).

Only issue now is when i come to a stop the rpm drop to almost zero but that for another forum.
The COP big difference definitely can feel the difference and sound better

Flyin Miata tool make the crank bolt really easy to deal with.

Pretty much instantly bent their Ninja tool though when I had it on while loosening the cam bolts, but worked perfectly to hold the pulleys in place while i put on the belt.

Harbor Freight seal puller worked nicely on the cam seals. Crank seal was a pain trying to get the puller at the right angle, but using the seal puller head by itself unbolted from the stick part made it not too bad in the end.

I struggled to get the crank seal out of the DIVA. I used every homemade tool trick I ever used that worked and nothing. Then I bought this Lisle seal puller (https://www.amazon.com/Lisle-58430-Shaft-Type-Puller/dp/B000FPYW4K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1544757990&sr=8-1&keywords=lisle+seal+puller). So I was the fortunate winner of a 1999 Blue 10th Yeah Anniversary Miata at a auction in my state. After a look over assessing all the possible issues and giving it a service, I began my first drive in my new to me Miata.
The engine was perfect in both appearance and sound, the suspension still feels sporty, the tires are slightly less than middle-aged, and with less than 90k miles on the odomotor, I was feeling lucky for the trip.
After nearly a 500 mile drive with a holy top at a constant 80mph, I have it stowed home with a shopping order nearly worth the car's auction price on the way fixing many things, including the ruined top.
I have no plans on this being a daily driver and the winters in my home are rough, so the majority of this first order is for when I winterize it each year.
I couldn't find info on any tune ups done in her history, so a 60k mile tunup kit is on the way.
I plan on helping this 20 year old gal return to her prime or even better.
$3700 before auction cut and taxes.
$1800 In a new top, new speakers, lights, and winter storage and care.
$1400 In a future order consisting on intake and exhaust improvements.

My largest concern is honestly my center console being broke open. I don't like the way how it is broken, and a replacement cover may not be all I will need. I have looked around for a complete assembly, and have yet to see one for my year.

Nice score. One thing you mentioned that I thought I should point out is the turret oil. If you have the 6 speed, the oil is not separate for the turret, as a matter of fact, you can fill the oil for the trans through the turret rather than pump it from underneath. If you have a 5 speed, then you will have the separate turret section though.

5spd or 6spd? Just curious since it has a Torsen. If 6, there is no turret oil, and the Motorcraft MTF may work better. If it’s just a 5 spd, press on, but you’ll want to invest in the two rubber boots, and shifter bushing kit since you’re going to be there. At 142k, it’s probably past time. The boots have a life span of about 30k miles.

Unless your intake and exhaust are failing there's no reason to replace it. You won't get $1400 worth of performance improvement out of it.

As far as the console, as long as it's not that specific 10AE Blue you can use any 99-00 black console to be original although at this point most all of them have the failing hinges. An upgrade is to get an 01-05 console instead. It's a straight bolt in replacement. Better usability, better construction. You can even easily move the lock mech over so that the key remains the same.

The boots typically last about 35K miles (about 2+ years) before starting to tear so the odds are good they need replacing. If you're getting them from a dealer (I recommend Priority) order the lower boot for an NC. It's a direct fit and cost almost exactly half of what the NA/NB piece costs.

Unhooked the defroster from the soft top and reinstalled the hard top to realize that I had disconnected the defroster at the wrong connector and correct spot was ... you guessed it ... buried under the folded soft top. Took the hard top off again and this time did it right. Took it for a ride and noticed some whistling at the header so took it off again and conditioned the rubber. Still whistling and I notice a little bowing upwards in the center above the windshield. Probably a storage issue. Hopefully it will settle over time. Check the CAS blanking plug on the back of the drivers side, where the VC(valve cover) and head meet. It’s about an 1 1/2” round, inset with a strap across the face of it. Pretty typical, and easy to replace.

I replaced mine, and applied the sealant to the part of the lip that contacts the motor. It required cleaning the head/VC surfaces for a good seal. The plugs have a rubber seal of their own, but it gets squished with time. The new plug has a brandy new rubber belt.

If that is still what’s leaking, there’ll be plenty of oil in the area.

About 9pm a car one lane over and about 3 car lengths ahead of me hit it and sent it towards me. I had nowhere to go and not enough time to really react. Hit it dead on at 75mph.

I pulled over, first car did not. Gave it a quick once over in the dark on the side of the road and determined that nothing was so damaged that I couldn't drive home but the other day was the first chance I had to actually get under it and Survey the damage in the daylight.

Sadly I learned something else. I have a dash cam and it was recording at the time of the incident. Unfortunately I learned that my SD card was damaged and that the dashcam hadn't saved any files for weeks. So no dash cam video of the incident to share.

Searched for an illusive coolant leak. I noticed a 50 cent sized puddle of coolant on the ground under the front a few days ago. I could find no active drips, squirts, or wet spots on hoses, but the reservoir is going down. The search continues... :dunno:
Ordering new hoses so I have them when I do the TB/WP hopefully in 2 weeks.

Earlier this week the passenger side window decided to not go down all the way. I knew it had to be a broken zip tie so I removed the card today and replaced the zip tie.

Adjusted the rear brakes. Stops so much quicker now.

Wife and I went for a cool, 60*, top down drive to get something to eat and fill up the gas tank.

I finally started my coolant system/timing belt overhaul for the winter today. Got the two radiator hoses off and two of the smaller lines that go to the thermostat housing. I need to get some comically long needle nose pliers to reach the oil cooler lines though. Also a little hesitant to go at the heater lines, I don't want to deform them and have to replace the heater core. The good news is the coolant was nice and green, no milkshake color.

I also discovered that there is no harm in taking off the intake manifold brace, so I will definitely do that in the future for oil changes. It makes a world of difference in accessing the filter. Only takes a couple minutes, a 14mm socket, and a 12mm socket.

Interesting thing I found was that the bracket that holds the crank position sensor wire wasn't bolted to anything (I believe it's supposed to go to a timing cover bolt?). I'm lucky that didn't get jammed up in the crank pulley or throw a belt off! It was probably a random noise I heard once or twice for sure.

NB heater core pipes are pretty stout aluminum compared to the soft copper ones in the NA.

ha the "fix" I went with was supergluing very strong mini magnets to the inside of the latch cover that you pull open. The actual locking part is steel it seems and they hold tight against it even when worn. I tend to prefer just pulling the latch rather than hitting the button first and this has worked for the last 1.5 years without issue :D

Recently, my driver seat had some stitching break apart :(. So I used a little carefully placed super glue there and it seems like that'll work. This should hold me over until I decide to replace the seat covers

I have the same problem but I generally can't hear it as there is an even louder wind whistle somewhere at the back of the drivers door only with the hardtop on. I'm starting to wonder what the point of an HT is as the soft top is just as weather tight and quiet plus it has the added bonus of going down if you get some decent weather in the winter.

How did you store yours? Mine was sitting on the rear chrome pieces with the header seal leaning against a wall. I'm wondering if the weight caused it the header to warp a little in the middle since that is the leak area. I've been carrying a rubber mallet in the car and giving it some light raps every now and then and it seems to have gotten slightly better. Maybe just settling in over time?

At any rate, you might want to check out these threads. As recommended, I need to spend some time carefully checking the fit at all 6 mounting points.

I went for an end of year drive this morning before the predicted rain started. I have managed to avoid putting the top up this winter.

A couple of months ago I mentioned driving my son's '86 Z31, which he left in our driveway when he sold his house in the burbs and moved to the city. My conclusion was the Z ain't no NB. But the car is still in my driveway and I have come to appreciate its virtues. It needs some fiddling, but it is in remarkably good condition for an unrestored, original condition 33-year-old car. For my Christmas present my son gave me the title to the Z. It's still not an NB, but it's increasingly fun. I took it out for a drive yesterday. One cannot have too many fun cars.

I took the photo a while ago, before the leaves turned.

We had a nice day here for this time of year with temperatures in the low 50's and some sun so I pulled the hardtop off and took a couple hours ride. After 35 years of British sportscars, it amazes me to have so little wind backdraft with the windows up and an effective heater is just plain decadent!

While I was pulling the hardtop off anyway, I removed the two non-eponymous latches on the left side that tend to pop open and built up the latch side with some JB Weld. One of the mounting screws on the windshield header latch refused to budge so I ended up drilling the head off. The plan was to remove the remaining stud with locking pliers but the bolt preferred to snap off flush in lieu of turning. Someday I will need to address that but in the meantime, how critical is it to have three bolts holding the latch on? Is two enough? (the broken one is the one on the side with two closest to the back of the car).

Not British Racing Green. BRG was only available on 1991 (color code HU) and 2001 (color code A3V) cars. What you have is a Emerald Green Mica (color code 18J) car. You can be certain by looking at the label on your drivers door jamb. It will list the color code for you.

BTW, I had a 2000 18J. It was my first NB. Congrats. You'll love it.
