Hey everyone! I’m getting a ‘99 Miata 10-Year Anniversary Edition in red sometime next week. It’s my first Miata, and actually my first daily driver to work on. The guy I’m buying it from did mods to it with the help of his local Miata club. The seller also says the previous owner had a turbo on it along with performance breaks. It is evident that there was actually a turbo because there’s a boost gauge installed(that is just aesthetic now because of turbo removal). Do y’all think that the owner prior to the one I’m buying from had an aftermarket ECU installed(megasquirt) in order to run the turbo? That would be a total plus. Also will you guys please tell me what the first maintenance things I should do, along with any preventative maintenance. I plan on doing lots of mods, including hard top, racing seats+harness, and full brake kits. Thanks for your time I appreciate it.

-HarroJust an FYI, the 10 Anniversary Edition only came in blue, like the one below along with some other special bits. All other '99s are just regular Miatas. Lolhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190529/88565e67684e15a3393c20f43ed5091e.jpg

I did a vin check on my soon to be car and it said the trim level was “10-year anniversary edition” even though it’s red. I have read that the only 10 year ae’s are the blue ones but idk

Also I just found this red one being sold from a car dealer in Washington with a 6speed(only on ae) and it says it’s a 10 year AE.

I assure you, it's not a 10AE. Sites assume that because it's a '99 it's the special edition.

Ah okay thanks. If you have any knowledge on my original question, a reply would be greatly appreciated.I would check the location of the stock ecu to see if there's an aftermarket unit there. You'll likely find nothing but the oem ecu as most piggy back or plug and play ecus can easily be pulled and sold for decent money. I'd assume that's the case here especially if the turbo was uninstalled.

As far as maintenance, the typical stuff. Replace all fluids (oil, trans, diff, brake, p/s and shifter turret)

Stock ECU can't handle boost so if it had a turbo, it had an aftermarket ECU or some sort of piggy back situation going on (power cards?). Also, just because it's a 99 does NOT mean it's an anniversary edition...AE models only came in blue with blue top and blue carpet/seats. No anniversary edition came in red..so be conscious of that when it comes to asking price. Other than that...WELCOME to the club and enjoy the crap out of your new toy!!!

Thanks so much man! Can’t wait to zip around. Getting a good price so even since it’s not an AE I’m still gonna be a proud owner, getting a good price. :)

:confused::confused::confused: A/C???? You're in a convertible :rofl::thumbs:

Nothing like getting stuck in slow traffic at 3 pm on an 95* day. Top down, the sun's cooking you directly. Top up, your sitting in a slow cooker turned on high.

I actually prefer having the top down even when it's hot out. I just don't like arriving at work looking like I just got out of a sauna. The last five miles to work is mainly stop and go traffic and takes me 20 minutes.

The worse part about no A/C is getting stuck in our hour-long rain storms and can't have the windows down and the windshield is getting steamed up. That's the main reason I got my A/C fixed.

Congrats Harro. I’m guessing you’re excited about this car if you’ve added it to your signature line even before you’ve purchased it :)

As EvilMS3 has said, replacing fluids is probably good idea if you receive no records indicating when this work was last completed. The water pump probably should be replaced every 100k miles, and if your radiator is now 20 years old, then it has an increased risk of failing and causing big overheating problems. I think most people here would advise to change it sooner rather than later.

Which “local club” provided the help with some of the previous mods? If it’s BAMA, (I see you’re in the Bay Area), you might be able to meet someone who can give you some history on your car. You should sign up and come to one of the meets.

I had a feeling you might not have taken the sarcasm I threw at ya ;)

I work in the elements on a daily basis, but I also don't drive a Miata on a daily basis, so I understand how excruciating the sun can and also understand not having A/C on delicious 100* southern day can be with the top up or down. I have a little Native American in my bloodline, so I stay fairly dark year round, but even working the heat/cold, sucks at times :D

And I live 3 miles, one way, from work. Driving the Miata isn't necessarily fun in that short of a distance, so I prefer just driving my truck as my daily, which the A/C works when it decides to work, haha!

But, anyway, I was just messing with ya.

No worries! I didn't take it the wrong way. :)

I'm usually off work just after dark, but that particular day, Memorial Day, I went in early, and ended up being off at 3pm. Right in the middle of the hottest part of the day. Going to work, I didn't notice anything unusual with the A/C. But coming home, it was a very different story!

Ugh, I was off Memorial Day and it was super hot up here. While I had my car completely disassembled over the winter, I replaced all the A/C line o-rings, then got an A/C recharge and it's colder than ever. I used it like 10 seconds this year, LOL!

Took her out for a run Approaching 180K miles on the odometer.

Recently resolved these two.
P0401 - removed EGR (2nd one over the years), cleaned with brake cleaner (twice), WD40, then PBlaster. Checked passages and tubing. Code rolled off @ 89 miles.
P0106 - removed both MAP sensor and solenoid. Cleaned with Electronic cleaner, fiddled with that little filter. Checked tubing. Code rolled off @ 39.5 miles.

Actually been over the past week and a half or so. Installed the QMAX reroute thermostat housing, tried swapping the cam position sensor with no change in CEL, swapped seats for my Recaros, changed the crank angle sensor with no change in CEL, repaired the IACV connector (one wire had broken due to rubbing from the supercharger bypass hose) and finally inspected the wiring to my MS to see if there was anything apparent. Didn't see anything wrong, however on my drive afterwards the CEL never came on. Looks like I will be pulling the part of the harness I can and checking all the connections.

I had already done a reroute, all I did was swap out the thermostat housings. I got lucky, the gasket on the one I have been using stayed on the housing so I had no cleaning to do on the head. Here is the difference between the home made one I was using and the QMAX:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/47974694256_1b784abc82_c.jpg

Main differences are the location of the temperature sensor and the bleed screw on the QMAX. I couldn't get the heater connection to thread into the QMAX any further than you see, don't have a NPT tap so couldn't chase the threads. I'm keeping an eye on it for leaking.

Read up on baselining. I think it is in the garage section. Every mod you are discussing has multiple threads on pro’s and cons. Google search with Miata.net as one of the search terms works better than the search function in here. The ECU is on the firewall behind the dash above the brake and clutch pedals. Take a look is the easiest way. Removing a turbo means a fair amount of work to return to stock. Hopefully the P.O. did it properly.

Finally, I would post specific questions as new stand alone threads in the appropriate section. Posts in this section get lost pretty quickly due to volume.

It's not too bad, but easier if you don't have the EGR crossover tube thingy in the way. Little tip, if you do it, don't put teflon or pipe dope on the temp sensor or the dash gauge will not work... Ask me how I know

Pure Supermiata's directions, you risk the chance of cracking the housing, if you try to screw it in all the way. I got about 3-4 threads in there and it was tight well before that. It's tapered, so it shouldn't leak, mine doesn't. Speaking of mine, here it is:

I know what NPT means, and that they are tapered threads. My point was mine only went in a turn and a half, two at the most which isn't correct. Don't know if the hole wasn't tapped far enough or what, just something I have to keep an eye on.

Uhmm... not right, should do at least 4-5 threads till hand tight and then 1-3 more with a wrench to deform the threads for effective sealing.

Replaced the dead downstream O2 sensor tonight with a Denso (234-4330) plug n play unit. I had gotten about 8 months out the cheap sensor I bought while money was tight. Ironically, the same brand, cheap upstream sensor died after about 8 or 9 months also.

When I bought them, I thought if they last a long time, good. If not, I'll be in a better position to replace them with better quality when they die. The cheapie sensors had a 1-year warranty, but I didn't feel like going through the hassle of getting them replaced only to have them go out again in 8 months.

Still trying to hunt down a strange little metallic ticking sound, coming from driver’s side rear tire area (I know this from an iPhone recording). Only hear it at about 10 mph, maybe 4-5 ‘ticks’ coming from a stop. It’s a random sound; I hear it in gear or in neutral, with brakes lightly dragging or not. Brake pad clips are in place. Anyone have any ideas? It seems to be wheel related. Center cap for RPF1 temporarily removed, but no improvement.

For diagnostic purposes, it doesn't matter if they're unidirectional. If the noise moves to the opposite side, there's a problem with that wheel/tire. F to R will work too.

Could a slightly dented wheel make an irregular (NOT rhythmic) noise like that? When I had my new tires mounted 4-5 weeks back, my mechanic said he moved that wheel from front to rear, because of the dent he identified. (I don’t feel any vibration or have any bad handling). The noise was there before the new tires, coming from that wheel when it was mounted on the front drivers side. I am meticulous with my torque wrench on lug nuts.

Should I be concerned with a crack propagating and making noise in the process? It’s loud enough that I should be able to hear it in 2nd, at higher speeds, but I don’t. I’m grasping at straws - I’ve lived with it for close to two years.

Thanks.

You'll like the canvas top! They are so much nicer than the vinyl tops! I put an almost mint NB2 black canvas top in place of my worn out NB1 tan stock vinyl top! It looks so much better with the top up, not that it's up that much

I put my top up from inside the car for the first time. I know about the idea of attaching a dog leash but haven't gotten around to doing it yet. (I was actually thinking of putting in a small eye hook and only clipping the leash on when needed). Some contortion required to lift it that way but the same is true for getting out to lift it lol. I'm guessing it will only work in warmer weather when the top material is pliable but nice to know I can do it!

Rolled her out of the garage for the first time from a long, Northwest, winter's nap. Stored with non-ethanol (91), a splash of Stabil, and 40 lbs. of air in the tires. Two visits with the Battery Tender over the cold months and a final top-up charge yesterday.

Dropped the tire pressure down to 29 reconnected the battery and Ta-Da ... no issues. She started in a couple cranks idled down fine. Took her out for a road test finding no issues or concerns. Checking the VC on return after a proper heat cycle, there was no emulsified water/oil goo under the cap or VC edge under the cap hole access. Good, tells me there's no water in there. Checked the catch-can and seems clear (from goo) as well.

Just sayin', got this pup last year with 58K now showing 60 and is a blast when you don't have to wrench-to-drive. (Old MGB owner). But, you guys shamed me into buying a new radiator this year as she's the brown (explode-O) color. Bollocks!!

I don't know if it's because I've been lining things up and filling in the missing pieces or what, but I got a TON of stuff accomplished today. The engine bay is nearing completion and is really starting to look like a Miata again. The last thing to do in the engine bay is the throttle assembly which is being a bear.

I'm not sure I can get it ready in time for my 2 week vacation at the end of THIS month. It'll be tight. Even if I get it all together I still have to get it smogged and plated before I can take it. I'm going to try though.

With that in mind I left a bit early to go home and do an oil change (Rotella T-6 synthetic) and install ANOTHER front O2 sensor in the DIVA. It needs to get smogged and plated before the end of July.

I gotta stop buying cars in the summer. I have one due in May, one in July, one in August and one in September.

After some minor engine and cooling work to the NA, this weekend I was race control for the conference road race. The control tower is in between hot pit exit and Paddock exit. I "can't got counter course", which is only like 10 feet or so, so I "have to do" a hot lap all the way around. 8x a day.

Oh boo hoo...

So yeah, the Miata got 24 "hardship laps" to test everything is ok this weekend.

On Sunday I drove the NB to Original British Car Day in Mt. Airy, MD, about 35 miles from home. I couldn't have asked for a better day for the drive, all on back roads. I ended up convoying the last few miles with a TR8 and an MG TD. Lots of interesting cars at the show, for me the highlights being a new Morgan 3-wheeler and, at the opposite end of the spectrum, a Rolls Royce Dawn. On the way home I met and exchanged waves with an NA and an ND. It was just the kind of day to make you glad you have a Miata.

Had to use my Thompson air horn. Proceeding through a green light at an intersection on the way home from work - two vehicles facing me at the light want to turn left in front of me. As is the case most of the time, the second vehicle thinks it’s ok NOT to look up for oncoming traffic and just stay close to the front car’s bumper through the turn.

I felt zero shame (indeed, strong gratification) in blasting the horn a solid three seconds as I hammered the brakes. I was so upset I could feel the center horn section start to deform inward. I’ve had the same scenario play out more than a handful of times when I used to ride street bikes, so I was able to expect it this time again.

This was the same intersection (at 6:45 THIS MORNING) where a loaded cement truck nearly took out my co-worker’s car at the bottom of the hill when the cement truck driver’s brakes failed and he rolled it over in an avoidance turn. He was seriously injured. He did that to avoid hitting the cars at the bottom of the hill, stopped at the light. Heroic move. Never be complacent.

I've had the local Sheriff Deputies in their SUV's try to occupy the same spot as my Miata on a few occasions. There's no excuse for not seeing a car right outside your left window. They are usually in a hurry to get around the slower vehicle in front of them.

So, the attention craving Diva got a fresh pair of Yoko S.Drives just in case she gets tapped to make the trip.

BTW, while doing the oil change this weekend I tried out one of my new tools, the ShowChrome oil filter tool (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0022ZFRM2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1). I'm not sure whether mine was a bit oversized or if the Instant Oil Change filter is undersized a bit. Whichever, I had the toll halfway up the filter and co*cked before it really grabbed. Still, it was better than any other tool I've tried in that space.

I wish I had done this back In February when it was 70* and not the 95* it was today. In the shade, the Miata's trunk lid was 120* as measured with the infrared therm.

I've only put a few miles on it with the top up, but it does seem to have quieted down the noise while the top's up.

I did measure before and after. The car sits 0.5 to 0.625in higher now, 13.75 all around measuring hub center to fender, which is normal based on a quick google search.

I think its the new top mounts, the old ones were drastically flatter and thinner than the new ones. I know its for NAs, but here is a thread that mentions ride height changes with collapsed NA-style top mounts, I see no reason that the concept wouldn't apply here.

NB top mounts do affect ride height with wear, they are solid metal.

If, OTH you replace the rubber isolators that sit between the springs and the lower perch and the top plate, it WILL affect height, quite a bit. The difference between having them in or removing them is about 3/4 to 1 inch lower without.

No. There's no turret on the 6-speed. It's open all the way into the trans and the shifter gets lubed from trans fluid splashing up from the trans.

There's the option for the 02 and up 6 speed at Moss. After August of 01, the bushing size changed. So the one you're talking about is for 99-05 5 speeds and 99-01 6 speeds (mfg before Aug. 01)

However after sitting about 25 minutes someone suggested the problem was heat related. I tried again and the car started right up and I made almost the whole way home. After another 20 minute wait I was on my way again.

Torque gave me the code P0340 both times. Waiting also gave me time to do some reading and heat soaking can cause problems with this sensor. Sitting in stop and go traffic in 84° weather was peaking my coolant temp to 218° so it was hot.

Time for a new sensor.

When mine died the first time, I search online and found I could probably start it up after sitting for awhile. It did, and after getting home, I found the only place local that had one was O'reilly's ($65). Later I bought a spare off Amazon for half that.

218* coolant temp on an 84* day? Sounds like maybe your radiator fan isn't functioning and your condenser fan is what's coming on at about 218* to do all the cooling. Test it quickly by turning on the A/C and see if both fans come on.

That's why some of us carry a spare sensor and a 10 mm wrench. Although I don't think I would have tried changing it while sitting there with that traffic.

I agree with the traffic comment. That little strip of asphalt isn’t even wide enough for a Miata. I would have hit the panic button in that scenario.

Panic set in when the engine died and I was in the center lane. I had barely enough momentum to make it to the shoulder. I went left as there was a break in traffic. I can’t imagine what I would have done if I had stopped dead.

Well, it wasn't today, but last week; changed out the diff fluid in the ToFu diff. That helped a lot with the weird shifting I've been having. Crazy how some dirty fluid (plus one tab..... ) can affect shifting so negatively. Anyways, back to the normal shifting after that fluid was changed, so I'm happy

Finally got around to adding some lock nuts to the muffler hanger I added. When I looked underneath I found one nut had disappeared yet again. I was thinking about using Nyloc nuts but someone pointed out the nylon might melt if the temperature of the hanger got high enough. Solution was some all-metal lock nuts courtesy of Ace.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48013535002_5c143701a8_b.jpg

Put those on to back up the regular nuts I had on there, shouldn't be any more issues with that.

I decided to pull the MS harness connections to see if there were any loose wires that might be causing the intermittent CEL. Didn't find anything abnormal, however when I was putting everything back together the power wire to the wideband pulled out of the StaKon. Fixed that with a new connector. Cleaned up my wire routing a little bit too, since I was already contorted it was a good time to do that. I'm getting too old for crawling underneath a dash. Have to do some driving to see if I took care of the CEL once and for all.

Spartantrap - I, too, am rockin’ out with the tofu diff. I’ll be doing my second fluid change (at around 110K miles). Just curious of your miles when you found the loose tab in the diff. I didn’t see any on my earlier drain / refill.

Not forced induction, but rigorously exercised (without thrashing).

How much weight do you estimate the matting added?

The Kilmat tiles weigh 7.8 oz each. There were 34 tiles in the box. I've used 14 in the cabin, 2 in each door, and 3 in the trunk so far (not finished yet). Using the whole box will only add less than 17 pounds.

I think it has been worth the added weight for less noise in the cabin with the top up.

In the cabin, since I didn't pull the dash, I wasn't able to go past the point where the floor makes the bend to go up behind the pedal cluster. I was able to add panels to the tunnel sides all the way forward.

The doors are more solid sounding when closing, and with the extra 1 pound on them, it seems to not take as much effort to make them latch. Some have said they noticed an improvement in mid-range tones from their speakers. I haven't noticed any difference, but I also haven't had much drive time since doing the doors yesterday.

Yesterday working on the trunk, I did the spare tire well and have noticed an increase in exhaust sound in the cabin. I still want to do the tunnels, trunk floor, and trunk lid using the remaining 6 tiles I have to work with.

144k is when I found my first tab. And I've changed the fluid twice before. Once with redline, another time with Valvoline, I don't know exactly what was put in this time (I think it was something ACDelco related)

Personally, these ToFu diffs need to have their gear oil changed more often. Because every time I've changed it out it starts looking healthier. My estimation is about 20k-30k miles is the sweet spot for them; just have to remember, these diffs have clutch packs, they're not straight gear on gear like the Torsens. Draining out the clutch material that gets in the oil more often is going to help it, but that's already past due with mine

I'm not FI yet. But I've been working towards getting there.... mainly saving up for a kit

Mine is definitely rigorously exercised, with the occasional unintended thrashing. I typically push my car harder than any other person I've ridden with; and most of them don't know how it stays running  rigorous maintenance is key

Fab9 coil on plug conversion kit installed this evening. My NB2 fired right up and does seem to idle better and run just a little smoother. I'll know better tomorrow morning when the engine is cold. It was still warm after the drive home this afternoon when I installed the kit and went for a test drive.

Not hard, but the instructions leave much to be desired. Fortunately, I found some pictures on line to give some guidance. For now, I left the coil pack in. Do most people leave that and the disconnected harness in place to revert to stock, if necessary, or is it easy to remove these nonfunctioning parts?

On my NB1 I left the original harness in place and taped over the connectors. I did notice better start up and idle as well as better throttle response although some of that may be the "Butt Dyno Effect" but in close to three years I've not had any ignition issues and this includes daily use and several track day events. Lots of discussion on the topic, but I feel that it's a good upgrade choice.

Great work! Unless you're already working on losing every gram from your car, you'll never notice the difference of 17 pounds of sprung weight. (Heck, I bet most on this forum could stand to lose that much weight from the driver! ;))

I did a full sound/heat dampener installation when I had the entire interior out for my dash chop project. I used Ballistic mat from Metra with some additional Dynamat over the trans tunnel. What made the biggest difference in sound for the trunk area was stuffing the tunnels. I used standard foam carpet padding from Home Depot. I just stuffed a rolled up piece in each tunnel, cutting it to fit as tightly as I could. It completely eliminated the "boom tube" effect of the tunnels.

Started out to get a window regulator from a junkyard, since NAPA doesn't carry them and Advance wants $211 for them. But halfway there, I get a call that that one doesn't work, so now I'm back to square one. There are so few Miatas on junk yards, especially around here (it is such a safe car, after all), and the nearest one I could find except for this one is two hours from here, and there is no guarantee it will work, either.

So now it is back to the internet searching for affordable parts close enough to me so I can get that %@#& regulator.

Spent several hours after work today out at the garage finishing up the last little bug-a-boo in the engine bay, the throttle cable bracket. The one that came with my used kit was for a car without ABS. Dropping the engine a 1/2" didn't help either. Forst I tried several ways to modify the original bracket. I soon gave up on that. Hour 1 shot. Then I decided to build a new bracket. So I found some L channel aluminum of the same thickness and set to it with my Dremel, drill and vice. Close, but no cigar. Hour 2 shot. Luckily I still had enough aluminum stock to try again, this time fixing the mistake I made on the first iteration. About 90 minutes later it was done and installed. It works (I think). I won't really know for sure until I fire up the engine.

https://i.imgur.com/by0tbme.jpg

I got far enough today that I took the battery off the maintainer and installed it and the new battery tray in the trunk. I gave the starter a few shots, enough to make sure it works, not enough to start the car. That's for tomorrow (I hope) after I fill the coolant and install the rest of the exhaust.

Lots of stuff still to do before I can drive it. Reinstall the front bumper cover, and hookup the lower lights, adjust the clutch per FM's instructions, reinstall the glovebox and seats, put the chassis braces back on, tires back on, hood back on. Hopefully Sunday I'll get a test drive. More than that, hopefully the test goes well and I feel confident of driving it to Michigan for vacation.

I also have an Android double DIN headend I want to install before I go. It'll be nice to have a clean way to have Torque and/or Nav running.

So of course I had my OBD-II reader in and soon after THAT happened (https://youtu.be/LgoH_6cuyeM) up popped this lovely thing.....

I love the fact that the permanent code is IMRC stuck closed but the pending code is IMRC is stuck open. This is of course the (I)ntake (M)anifold (R)unner (C)ontroller, so the VTCS valve isn't working. Shock of all shocks, the car no longer has one since the FFS coldside manifold is installed. I cleared the codes and no other codes popped, not even the P0106 that I used to get before I started the project. But as I was getting back into the swing of things I called Tom at The Parts Group and got that whole bundle of vacuum devices on the right side fender off of a really low mileage NB2 from him for pretty cheap.

Tomorrow I plan to get the front bumper on, hood on, under braces on and tires on before I take her for a spin. Hopefully I can get the monitors all set so I can get new tags before my trip.

Most of the splices are pretty bad, and I’m amazed it never caused problems (other than immobilizing the ignition whenever the battery was disconnected, so I disabled the system a long time ago).

Incredibly, only one wire to reconnect. The rest only needed tape where the insulation was removed to splice.

Felt like playing Electrician today so I added some LED lighting to my 99 Base.
Swapped out the OE rearview mirror for one with the built-in courtesy/reading lamps from a '98 Chevy S10. Soldered into the OE dome light wiring and used a round file to make a pass-thru for the cable in the windshield trim.

Next I installed a couple of door panel lights from a 1994 Trooper into the knockouts on the center console... need to widen the hole by about a 32nd to make it fit then just drill holes for the mounting screws. Ran leads to the back of the 10A Room fuse and the door switch wire in the left kick panel. Not hard to access even with a soldering iron.

Finally, opened the boot and did Mr. Caruthers' Side Marker light mod. Went as advertised, but instead of drilling holes, I swapped out the '99 reflectors with illuminated ones from a boneyard '97 NA.

No job is complete without a test-drive, so I took She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed up to Incline Village to share a bowl of gelato and watch the boats on Lake Tahoe.

A fine day indeed!

Following up on this thread (https://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=680607) from last fall, when the car was getting stored away for winter the same week, I ended up purchasing the parts and stored them away until today.

This morning the diff housing with its Torsen diff got installed as is, replacing the open diff which my car came with.

As I was told it was a direct replacement of the housing while retaining my driveshaft and half shafts. Working on a lift in a garage it took all of two hours to do the swap from rolling in the door to rolling out again once done.

First drive quickly flushed out any concern I may have had about either the parts, their condition or the install: it was as if nothing had changed but for the speedo reading a bit off compared to a GPS (as expected when changing out final drive ratio). Pulled to the side of the road before I got home and dropped the passenger's side in the dirt before taking off briskly to make sure everything was working as intended and instead of the sound of a wheel spinning in the dirt I heard a couple of very satisfying chirps of a tire fighting for traction against the pavement and pulled away as if both wheels had been on pavement.

I am very happy.

To lessen the effect of the change on final drive ratio I pulled open my cluster and reset the needle in the speedo. It's not dead on perfect at all speeds anymore but it is dead on around highway speed and the error factor is insignificant as far as I'm concerned when going slower or faster.

The Torsen is the only factory option my car didn't have that I still wanted. Gears are a little longer but where first gear used to feel too quick and short it now feels good and strong, third is long enough to get me well into trouble with the law if I wring it all the way to redline. Fifth however is now very comfortable at a steady speed since it dropped a few hundred RPMs.

Whenever I get around to adding more power it should all work out pretty good as is.

Today was a good day.

Got the front clip back on, all the under bracing back on, wheels mounted up and then.....

For the first time in over a year Miata Prime hit the road!!!! Sure it was just a shake down cruise but the shakedown took a couple hours. I still have tweaking to do, but overall the first run was a success. The FFS Suoercharger is AWESOME! I have the 105 pulley on which is supposed to deliver about 200 rwhp and it feels it.

The Blackbird FabWorx street drop mounts are also awesome. The shifter is ALWAYS located right where it's supposed to be, it doesn't wander which means the gear you want is going to be right where you expect it to be. As far as NVH, there is more, especially at idle. But when running it smooths right out. These things are also supposed to mellow out after a few hundred miles. We'll see after my vacation trip. Just as a point of reference, the stock engine mounts that came out weren't in bad shape, they were aging, bit not shot.

Yep, headlights, taillights, parking lights and flashers all worked. Then needed to check my brake lights so I got in the car and backed it up to the side of someone else's car (just close enough to see the reflections of the individual lights in their paint) and sure enough, they worked as well. Of course, having found the lights all working I should have just put the car to bed, but no. Did (and redid) some deferred maintenance items yesterday.

The most important was replacing the camshaft position sensor so I won't get stranded on the next hot day in stop and go traffic. I haven't been able to duplicate the problem but now I'm prepared.

Retightened the temp selector cable on the flapper to stop the hot air coming out of my vents when it's set to cold.

Changed out a burnt out fog light bulb - the only non-Life ones I have left.

Retorqued all rear suspension bits to spec as I was hearing the return of the intermittent clanking noise over road cracks.

And felt so good about doing these I took her out for a good 100 mile run along the Mississippi and Cannon Rivers.

Finally idling smoothly after pulling the engine and trans to replace all the seals/gaskets, and rebuild the head.

Unfortunately, it’s got some lifter tick, though not as bad as my mic makes it sound:

I was impressed with the 128 rwhp number until I saw it was on a flattering DynoJet. On a Mustang they're usually closer to 118 rwhp. Still those are decent numbers for an unopened junk yard engine.

Yeah but NASA Time Trial requires a Dynojet. So it is what it is. That being said it made nice power and peak power was 6850rpm. But not bad for a 137k now 138k engine with a square top, edm ecu, racing beat header, ddm stage 2 intake, and a mazda motorsports adjustable timing wheel. A fuel pressure regulator would help lean it out up top. Its sitting around 11.9:1 afr. Mid range is good around 12.4-12.6. They say aim for 12.8-12.9 to help lean out up top.

I was about to ask ya, if that was not stock ;). I'd like to see what my dyno's at, but there's nobody close by with a dyno... Does the square manifold really make that much of a difference? I'm still running a stock ECU, but debating on going with an aftermarket ECU.

I enjoy it. No more choke up past 6400rpm. Shoot dyno graph is still pulling some. EDM ecu did not do much kinda got it in a trade. But it has no warm up stuff for the 2001 VCTS. It could help with an ECU. That is on the to do list. The timing wheel was nice. Nothing like adding 10 degrees of timing advance to everything.

You can. I ran it on a stock USDM ecu. I had the vacuum actuator still doing its job. This way I got no check engine light. However warm up had a lot more bucking due to the missing vtcs flaps. Not a big deal. At some point a ms3 will be going into the car.

I installed a new Android 9.0 based headend in the dash for one main purpose, to be able to use Torque to monitor my OBD-II data. There are two other apps that I'll use regularly, one is Waze for navigation and the other is Plex so I can stream music from my server at home. A 100K songs and no stupid jocks who think they are comedians or annoying commercials EVER. I use my cell phones unlimited data plan to deliver internet connectivety over it's Wifi hotspot to the headend. SO much simpler than trying to keep a storage device in the car in sync with my server when my car was close enough to connect to my home Wifi network.

It also boots faster than my old Nexus 7 tablet even though it had been rooted and was running a special car based Android 4.0 ROM. And since it was designed to work in a car it also never runs out of battery power. The Nexus had a habit of running down it's internal battery when it sat and then you'd have to remove it, charge it and press the power button which was hidden when mounted.

I think that looks good at that height. I dropped mine about an inch or so and put 15's back on it. My pinch weld up front is about 5" and rear pinch weld is about 5.25", with a half tank.

Mine scrubbed slightly, with a full tank, on the twisties, so I also rolled the flat lip upwards. Has been fine ever since then. :)

Directions suggested having a 1/2 tank of fuel before you adjusted coilovers, so that's what I did. I also used the Eastwood roller and sold it right after that, for what I paid for it, LOL!

Good choice - proper tool. I had a friend, as a "favor", he had a colleague roll the rear fenders on my MS6, after they shreaded a new set of Yokohama tires. Quite the botched job. I ultimately did it myself with a heatgun, aluminum baseball bat and telephone book in my garage. Took a considerable amount of pull in the rears, in addition to the roll. XD
But the DIY method worked well in a pinch, and is a good alternative in the event an Eastwood roller isn't available.

Good times.

The PO of my 2003 did a DIY roll and pull. I don't know what tools he used, but the results were kind of rough. It wasn't horrible, but was noticeable if you looked for more than a quick glance. It's a moot point now that I cut the fenders to install my widebody kit, but it always bothered me a little before that. I'm definitely a proponent of using the right tool for the job!

The trunk is 100% still functional in every way, the fastback is a two piece set up one being the main top the other the trunk lid that some what slides into the top. You still pull the trigger in the car or use the key to unlock the trunk and simply slide and lift the trunk lid. You can see the line for the lid in the picture below.

Which ATOTO A6 Model is the one you bought, as there are 8 different models on Amazon? Does it use GPS as a map too?

I used the ATOTO A6 pro. One step down from the most expensive one. As I figured gesture control with the shifter so close would be potentially bad.

The dashcam is the ATOTO unit. But having done the install, any USB webcam would work. You need a LONG LONG cable to fish through the dash, to the puller and up, then across the top, and down behind the rear view mirror. Then you slap a SD card in, and the native dashcam app writes to it in 10 minute sections.

The flat USB adapter I used to replace the cigar lighter was a straight forward amazon unit. I will add links to the end of this post.

I also gutted the Bose amp, speakers, and associated wiring. I went with an infinity reference 6.5” component system. Mounting the tweeters in the factory location. And I’m using a teeny, tiny alpine amplifier to push 90 watts RMS out two channels for hearing damage volume levels.

Yes it has google maps, and its own GPS antenna. So you can use it for navigation with any app from the google play store. When I use it to navigate, or stream Spotify, I just turn on the hotspot on my phone, and the HU is basically an internet connected android tablet.

Rebuilt my shifter.

Holy Hell!!

Both boots were totally shredded, there was maybe.. 1oz of thick burnt tar-like "gear oil" left in there. Also, PO had totally removed the insulation pad when they ran speaker wires thru the console...

I was staring at concrete after I took out the console!

Rebuilt with the bronze bushing, and new insulation, gear oil, new shift gaiter and carbon fiber knob.

It's almost like a new car, what without the burnt oil smell, constant gear whine, road noise, and ungodly heat coming up from the shifter.

Successfully closed and latched my new soft top that was installed on Wednesday. It was very tight, which I was expecting based on some threads that I have read here. I ended up using ratchet straps hooked to the top door hinge, which worked like a charm. I loved the zippered windows on my NAs, so I chose to go that route with this new top for my NB. :)

I also got my broken battery tie-down bolt extracted.

For the few of you who were curious, I love the CCP fastback, the figment was spot on, I’d say the only draw back is weather proofing the thing, not super easy to do. But windows all bolted right up, top say in the car nicely. I have color matching paint just haven’t taken it in yet.

I’m not familiar with that top, but I love the fastback look! Where did you buy it, and how much did it cost?

Here it is installed in the dash.

Here's one of the standard dashboards filled with gauges

https://i.imgur.com/oG47Q2v.jpg

Here's my custom set of gauges with just the two I'm interested in.

https://i.imgur.com/XbgtHKN.jpg

Now if I could only route the AFM data from my AEM Failsafe AFM/Boost gauge into it.....

I'm most likely going to do this. I've had iPhones since they came out, so I instinctively installed a car play head unit in my Tacoma. It's much roomier and I have a fire tablet that I can mount on one of the RAM mounts for Torque II. The Android head unit makes way more sense in the Miata...hadn't even thought of that...thanks for posting.

Donated some blood to the Miata yesterday by finding some time to dodge the rain and brave the heat and humidity to finish putting the Kilmat in the trunk.

The driver side tunnel is where I started the blood transfusion. I didn't realize just how tight it was getting my arm past the fuel filler hose until I found the little bracket that holds the vent tube to the filler neck.

Haven't stuffed the tunnels yet, the heat and humidity got the best of me and had to quit. Still have a couple sheets of Kilmat left for "fine tuning" any areas that need it.

Over all, I'm pleased with the difference the Kilmat and Reflectix made in abating heat and sound. It was well worth the time and cost in doing this project.

Looks great!.

If I may make one suggestion; I'd figure some way of getting that air filter moved to the outside. No point in taking super hot air from under the hood, heating it further with the turbo and then having to somewhat cool it again.

Right behind the driver's side headlight is a nice hole you can use to pass a duct to the area in front of the radiator.

A box will help but nothing beats getting air from outside the hood. I have a section of aircraft ducting bringing outside air to the stock airbox in the '04. OATs are about 5-8° above ambient when on the highway as measured by the ScanGauge.

As some of you know I've been trying to get ready for my vacation for awhile. Plan A was to get Miata Prime done and tested to travel north. After driving it around for a week locally on expired plates there was just no way I was going to get all the niggles fixed in time.

So on to Plan B which was to change the cam sensor in the G35 that I had been putting off, get it smogged and take that. I got the sensor changed, but then it started having other sensor probles in a cascade. Not unsolvable, but not in the time left at hand.

So Plan C is the Diva. And of course she was DEMANDING something herself. Today was spent pulling the 10K old driveshaft from Miata Prime and putting it into the Diva to replace the one with the crapped out front joint. Success! Looks like the Diva is going to take the trip with me.

When I bought the car last year, it had three decent tires and one not-so-good. After a very exciting ride in the rain last week, I drove the Miata to the pick and pull today and found a very nice replacement tire on a Chevy Aveo. The junkyard has a manual tire removal machine if you don't want to pay for a useless wheel as well; unfortuneatly it's right in front of the payment window so everyone in line is watching you dismount the tire. I have a Harbor Freight tire removal but this one was a little different. I figured it out after a while and the tire came right off like I knew exactly what I was doing! I don't think I've ever done anything so manly, before lol. Now I still have to mount and trial and error balance it. Beautiful day for a drive so I took the long way home.

If anyone is wondering why I don't just buy some good quality new tires, I have 4 cars and the budget is limited. Plus there's something atavistic satisfying in the successful hunt and bringing home the quarry.

Last of the car stuff before I leave on Vaca.....

Drove out to the garage and pulled the FFS Sc extension harness so I can send it back to Tom to add the VTVS eliminator relay and make sure it has all the lastest firmware/software on it. Shipping it out tomorrow so it'll be waiting for me when I return. Here's ONE place I appreciate the NA over the NB. The ECU position in the NB (under the dash, above and behind the steering column, means removing the seat and contorting your body into that little space to pinch the clip and pull it out. Tiny quarters to get it all done. And removal is easier then install!!!

On the NA 1.8 the ECU is in the passenger footwell. Easy to get to. Sigh.

Also packed a few tools, a new CAS, my zippy jack and a few other essentials. It's a long trip and I'd rather see if I can fix any problems rather than sit by the side of the road stressing about when the tow truck is going to arrive and how much the tow will cost or how much the local mechanic will charge an out of towner to repair a foreign car.

Now I can start thinking about the actual vacation, like what to pack and what I'm going to do with the 3-4 days I don't have anything planned. A day trip to Lake Michigan sounds like a winner.

$1200 :( I miss the days of $800 hardtops but it seems any in that range are completely beat. Figured I dont seed Emerald Green hard tops that often so I jumped on it.

Not a bad price at all, considering no paintwork required.

After taking it out and about with missus to a couple a festivals in the city and a quick visit with friends I came and washed and waxed it. Took it for a quick spin and hit this milestone. 310025310026

She’s a Beaut - especially clean without all the tupperware. Some days I wish I could keep my mileage down like yours. But the differences in our climates just don’t ‘allow’ me to do that [emoji6]

I don’t think I’ve even crossed a green hardtop, you’re super lucky! Yeah any tops around my area aren’t even under $1300 now days

So I lied. One more car thing before I go. I replaced the front O2 sensor a couple weeks ago because it again rested up against the exhaust, this time melting the heater wires. I had a couple months to go before my tags are due, but I thought I'd check my monitor status and the Diva was clean and green. So since the smog place was right across the street from where I was filling up with 93 octane for $2.61, I thought Id get it smogged for $9. It's was an 87* day, the asphalt I was on was much hotter, the intake temps were reading 145* and the Diva was idling cool as a cucumber at 199* while waiting for her turn.

Car now has 130K on it. At 117K the Diva got a Priority TB/WP kit , new OEM hoses, new OEM thermostat, new OEM rad cap and a used OEM style radiator that already had about 22K on it.

Taking care of your cooling system takes care of you and your wallet.

I installed the Moss Miata floormats that my wife got me for Father's Day. In addition, I was at the local pick and pull over the weekend and there was a 99 Miata. I went back tonight and snagged the hood and and trunklid for under $100 together. Mine have hail damage and I figured replacing them would be a lot easier than trying to repair dozens of dings. These were in very nice shape, not sure why the car was in the boneyard other than noting it was an automatic. :)

Just finished a quick test drive after installing a new aluminum radiator and thermostat. It really did make a difference. I'm sure that the other radiator was not the original (to many years and to many miles) and was most likely a cheap replacement. Now I can run the AC with out constantly watching my torque pro display.

I recently changed jobs, and I'm now at a location with a Hunter Road Force balance machine... So, I rebalanced my wheel/tire assemblies; not to under 10lbs of road force, but it's still way better than it was. Honestly, I have some bent wheels that I want to replace with some 6ULs, but I need my RX8 to have an engine first, then I can worry about getting better wheels....

Finally did the Foamectomy on my 99. Both bottom and back. Took an inch or so off the bottom pan side and half to 3/4" off the back center top. Much better seating position and support - both lumbar and side bolster.

Ordered front rotors and pads, SS brake lines and a Roadstersport4 muffler. I think I might be done working on/modding the car for the year. Now it's time to just enjoy driving it.

Over the weekend I went to Road Atlanta for first Time Trial weekend with Nasa. Came in last but still improved 2.5 seconds over my old personal best. Down to a 1:51:4xx. Time to get some wider wheels, pretty much make the 15x8 fit. Then some new tires and its about time for bushings.

Video from the fast Sunday Session. Best lap here is a 1:51:5xx

Since buying it 3 weeks ago I have:

> changed the plugs
> polished the headlights and upgraded to LED's. (love 'em!)
> replaced a cracked taillight
> pulled out the ugly old AEM cold air intake along with some extraneous brackets
> installed a Cobalt cold air intake
> replace the door bushings with Delrins (made a WAY bigger difference than I thought they would)
> Bose-ectomy
> 4 tires and alignment
> windsheild
> replaced shift knob

Next is:

> install Flyin' Miata frame rails
> install high-flow grille
> replace power antenna with raked shorty

Me too! A bit of a risk as I bought it based only on pictures. It turned out to be everything I'd hoped and more. Congrats on yours as well.

Waterless washed today using Griot's spray on product. Happy with the results. Watched their video first to make sure I got the process as recommended (1st time trying). Meguiar's wax to follow. Surely it will stop raining here in NY, right? Getting itchy to go, but the little gem sees only sunshine...

I got stranded in the Walmart parking lot for several hours with a dead fuel pump! I'll pick up a new one tomorrow morning and install it. I'm going to replace a badly frayed AC belt while I'm at it.

600+ miles in the Diva yesterday, most with the top down even though it was overcast and spitting most of the day. But in IndianNoPlace the spit turned into a full out gulley washer. So pulled over and up went the top. For the first 15 minutes or so I got to enjoy water dripping off the inside of the top while driving down the freeway. Got to hang out on the Grand Haven beach until the sun set over the newly rebuilt lighthouse and catwalk.

The Diva ran flawlessly all day and woke up ready to go. After some coffee so was I.

That's a beautiful place to be! I went up to Holland, MI last June to get a titanium '02 SE but condition was not as described so I passed but ended up really liking western MI in June (no plans to visit in January brrr ). I doubt Mrs. 'lizard and I would have visited had I not been on the hunt but we're so glad we did.

My Miata is jealous of the Subaru that got new tires yesterday.
